& the Highlands

Our small group recently had the pleasure of experiencing the very best of Scotland, and I am delighted to share the highlights of this unforgettable journey. From cobblestoned city streets to dramatic Highland landscapes, Scotland exceeded every expectation.

Edinburgh: Where History Lives on Every Corner

We began our adventure in the historic city of Edinburgh, where we explored the city on foot with a guided walking tour and visited the iconic Edinburgh Castle, perched dramatically on volcanic rock above the city. The moment you see it rising from the rock with a rainbow overhead, you understand why Scotland captures hearts so completely.

We also took part in a hands-on Harris Tweed purse making workshop with Islander, connecting us to one of Scotland's most beloved and enduring craft traditions. There is something deeply satisfying about creating something with your own hands from a fabric that has been woven the same way in the Outer Hebrides for over a century.

We rounded out our time in Edinburgh with a Johnnie Walker whisky tasting experience, a wonderful introduction to Scotland's rich drink culture. Even if whisky is not your usual preference, the experience of learning about the craft and history behind it is genuinely fascinating.

Through the Highlands to Inverness

As we made our way north toward Inverness, we stopped to enjoy a delightful chocolate tasting, a sweet treat along the route to the gateway of the Scottish Highlands. A visit to a local farm gave our group the chance to feed the famous Highland cows, affectionately known as "Hairy Coos." Everyone absolutely loved this charming and memorable experience. It is impossible not to smile standing next to one of these magnificent creatures.

The Isle of Skye: Drama at Every Turn

From Inverness, our group continued on to the breathtaking Isle of Skye. The island did not disappoint, with its dramatic coastal scenery and winding roads that offered stunning views at every turn. The landscape shifts constantly, from golden moorland to steel-blue lochs to towering black mountains, often all at once under a brilliant blue sky.

One of our most memorable stops was Kilt Rock, where a magnificent waterfall cascades over dramatic cliff faces straight into the sea below. Standing at the edge looking down at this spectacle, with the sound of the water and the salt wind off the Atlantic, is one of those moments that reminds you why you travel.

A Fairytale Finale at Cross Basket Castle

We concluded our journey with a stay on the stunning grounds of Cross Basket Castle, just outside Glasgow, the perfect fairytale ending to an extraordinary trip. As a special bonus, our group was fortunate enough to witness filming of the highly anticipated Highlander remake, currently in production across Scotland. The film stars Henry Cavill in the lead role as the immortal Connor MacLeod, with Russell Crowe playing his mentor Ramírez. Not exactly something you expect to walk into on a travel itinerary!

Kristine’s Travel Tip

Scotland's weather can be wonderfully unpredictable, so we always recommend packing layers and bringing a rain jacket or a compact umbrella. Being prepared means you can enjoy every outdoor moment, rain or shine, without missing a thing. The most dramatic landscapes often come with the most dramatic weather, and that is part of what makes them so unforgettable.

My Next Adventure: Italy

The adventures do not stop here! I am currently preparing to explore the beautiful country of Italy, with the trip taking place in mid to late May. Our journey will take us through some of Italy's most breathtaking destinations, including the stunning Amalfi Coast, the art-filled city of Florence, the romance of Venice, and the unspoiled beauty of the Puglia region. Stay tuned for all the details, as I cannot wait to share this incredible journey with you. If Italy is on your bucket list, now is a great time to start the conversation!
